Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) National Convention Planning Committee, has confirmed the party will proceed with its elective convention in Ibadan this weekend. The announcement follows a strategic stakeholders meeting at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro.
Key party figures attended the closed-door session, including Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde (convention host), acting PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba, and former Minister Tanimu Turaki.
Governor Fintiri expressed confidence in the decisions reached, stating: “We’ve concluded our critical stakeholders’ meeting with elaborate resolutions. Our convention in Ibadan remains sacrosanct.”
Convention Proceeds Amid Legal Challenges
The declaration comes despite conflicting court orders regarding the convention’s legitimacy. PDP National Vice Chairman (South-West) Kamorudeen Ajisafe confirmed constitutional requirements have been met.
“Delegates began arriving since Wednesday,” Ajisafe stated. “We’ve secured attendance from two-thirds of Nigeria’s 36 states. This fulfills our constitutional threshold. Even without full representation, two-thirds attendance validates the convention.”
Party leaders maintain the Ibadan event will proceed as scheduled, emphasizing delegate participation meets necessary quorum requirements despite ongoing internal tensions.
