Factions aligned with former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike are reportedly challenging the endorsement of Tanimu Turaki as consensus candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) national chairmanship position.
Turaki’s endorsement emerged from a recent Abuja stakeholders’ meeting. This gathering included prominent PDP figures. Attendees included Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed and Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang. Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal also participated. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum was present as well.
Northern Blocs Divided Over Consensus
An anonymous northern leader revealed significant disagreement among PDP’s northern factions. The decision to present Turaki as consensus candidate has caused friction. This division stems from Lamido’s personal ambition for the chairmanship role. Simultaneously, Wike advocates for a candidate from Nigeria’s North-Central region.
“PDP northern blocs currently lack unity,” the source stated. “This has created member agitation. Groups supporting Lamido, including former state chairmen, drive this division. They resent Turaki’s endorsement.”
Wike Camp’s Preferred Candidate
Wike’s faction reportedly backs former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom. Both Lamido and Wike’s groups strongly oppose Turaki’s selection. They are actively campaigning against the consensus decision. Tactics include strategic meetings and press conferences. These aim to discredit the process while promoting their preferred aspirants.
Consultation Failure Fuels Opposition
Another senior PDP leader attributed the conflict to inadequate consultation. Northern governors failed to engage stakeholders before announcing Turaki. This oversight offended North-Central and North-West party members.
“Stakeholders felt slighted by the lack of consultation,” the leader explained. “Governors possess influence but must respect other leaders. Lamido supporters and North-Central proponents voice these concerns.”
Optimism for Party Unity
Despite current tensions, PDP leaders anticipate resolution. “Democratic processes will eventually harmonize positions,” the source noted. “We expect a united front at the convention. The party aims to regain power in 2027.”
