National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, has vowed his faction will take all necessary actions to preserve democracy within the party. He made this declaration on Tuesday after forcing entry into the PDP National Executive Committee meeting hall alongside Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi).
Turaki asserted his group’s readiness to appeal internationally to rescue Nigerian democracy. He stated tear gas attacks wouldn’t deter their mission. “We’ll ensure democracy survives,” Turaki declared. “Even if it requires paying with our lives.”
“We won’t hesitate to seek global assistance to save our democracy. Nigerians must stand firm against this threat,” he continued. “Democracy’s collapse would end Nigeria. We’re prepared to lay down our lives for its survival.”
The chairman questioned the origin of tear gas used against his faction. “These elements used non-police tear gas. But we won’t be deterred. We’ve reclaimed our office at Wadata Plaza. We’ll provide proper party leadership from headquarters.”
The confrontation occurred when rival PDP factions scheduled simultaneous Tuesday meetings. The faction backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike arrived first. Samuel Anyanwu, their National Secretary, led the group.
Turaki’s faction later attempted entry but faced blockades. This triggered the tear gas confrontation at the party secretariat.
