Alhaji Fasiu Bakene, a Board of Trustees (BoT) member of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has endorsed the expulsion of three prominent figures: FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose, and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. Bakene described the disciplinary action as long overdue during remarks in Abeokuta.
Justifying Expulsions as Necessary Discipline
Bakene accused the expelled leaders of repeatedly undermining the party that elevated their political careers. “Their actions violated the PDP constitution for years,” he stated. The BoT member criticized their pattern of campaigning for opposition parties while claiming PDP membership. He argued such behavior eroded party integrity.
“Rather than defect honorably, they discredited PDP while supporting rivals,” Bakene emphasized. He believes removing them restores internal order and confidence. The veteran politician views the expulsions as essential for the party’s survival.
Party Unity Under New Leadership
Despite recent defections, Bakene expressed optimism about PDP’s recovery. He noted internal disputes aren’t unique to PDP and praised the recent national convention’s organization. “Delegates affirmed party leadership strength through massive turnout,” he observed.
Bakene specifically commended newly elected National Chairman Kabiru Turaki. He called the former minister’s emergence “a step toward 2027 victory.” The BoT member highlighted Turaki’s administrative experience. “He’ll successfully steer our party forward,” Bakene concluded.
