The Board of Trustees (BoT) of Nigeria’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed its support for the Taminu Turaki-led National Working Committee. This committee was elected during the party’s recent national convention in Ibadan.
Senator Adolphus Wabara, the BoT chairman, stated the convention strictly followed PDP regulations. He emphasized compliance with the party constitution and Electoral Act. The gathering reflected delegates’ collective will nationwide.
Wabara strongly condemned the recent invasion of PDP’s National Secretariat. He identified attackers as expelled members and armed thugs. Their goal was to forcibly seize the party complex.
The expelled members mobilized thugs to block key leaders. They prevented access to PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman Turaki. Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed and Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde were also obstructed.
The BoT praised resisting governors, NWC members, and supporters. Their courage countered the attackers during the incident.
Wabara criticized expelled members’ media statements. He accused them of distorting facts about the convention. Their actions aimed to delegitimize the party’s democratic process.
“Their attempts to undermine the Ibadan Convention constitute a direct assault on internal democracy. Such mischief creates needless confusion within our party structure,” the statement declared.
The BoT demanded police investigation into the attack. They urged Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun to prosecute perpetrators. Accountability remains essential for democratic integrity.
“Democracy thrives where institutions stay impartial and professional. They must remain insulated from partisan manipulation,” Wabara emphasized.
The trustees reiterated commitment to PDP unity and stability. They insisted the Ibadan Convention’s mandate must be respected fully.
Wabara urged the Turaki-led committee to focus on rebuilding. Preparing for the 2027 elections should remain the priority. Expelled members’ distractions must not derail crucial reforms.
