The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. These lawmakers recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP calls their actions a betrayal of trust.
On Saturday, the party released a statement. It described the defecting lawmakers as “political puppets.” They are allegedly “doing the bidding of their paymaster.”
Speaker Martin Amaewhule was among those who defected. Ini Ememobong, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, issued the statement. He called the defectors “clogs in the wheels of democratic progress.” Ememobong also labeled them “enemies of democracy.”
This is not their first defection. The party highlighted that they had previously defected and then recanted. Their actions since taking office show them as mere “political puppets.” They have, in PDP’s view, made a mockery of the legislature. Their latest move is effectively a “defection from APC to APC,” the statement concluded.
PDP Vows Legal Recourse
The PDP plans to take decisive legal steps. They will activate provisions of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended). This aims to “recover the mandate” gained under the PDP banner. These mandates, the party argues, have now been “ignobly and surreptitiously switched to another platform.”
The party urged all members in Rivers State to remain faithful and resolute. They stressed ongoing efforts to rebuild the party. This rebuild focuses on inclusiveness, fairness, and equity for all.
