Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has expressed significant doubts about the Gunners’ Premier League title aspirations. He believes Mikel Arteta’s current strategy, which involves playing Mikel Merino as a centre-forward, could hinder their chances. Merson argues that giving Viktor Gyokeres an opportunity upfront would be a more effective approach.
Arsenal currently sits at the top of the Premier League table, holding a two-point lead over Manchester City. However, Merson insists that a tactical adjustment in the attacking line is crucial for them to sustain their title challenge. The Gunners are preparing to face Wolves this weekend, following a disappointing defeat to Aston Villa last week.
Speaking to Sportskeeda, Merson openly criticized Arteta’s player selection in the recent match against Aston Villa. “I thought Mikel Arteta got it wrong when he used Mikel Merino as the centre-forward in the game against Villa,” Merson stated.
He acknowledged Merino’s ability to score important goals. However, he emphasized Villa’s strong form. “Villa were bang in form. Arsenal needed someone like Viktor Gyokeres in that line-up to unsettle the opponents,” Merson added, highlighting the need for a different kind of presence.
Merson concluded with a clear warning regarding Arsenal’s long-term prospects. “I have said this before, and I will say it again. Arsenal won’t win the league if they keep playing Merino as their centre-forward,” he firmly stated.
