A High Court in Oyo State has directed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to proceed with its scheduled national convention. Acting Chairman Umar Damagum and the party must hold the event in Ibadan on November 15-16, 2025.
Justice A. L. Akintola issued the ruling on Monday. It followed an ex parte application by Folahan Malomo Adelabi. This decision overturns a restraining order previously granted by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Ibadan convention aims to elect new national officers for Nigeria’s main opposition party. The event marks a critical leadership transition for the PDP.
Legal Challenge Details
Three PDP members had petitioned against the convention. Austin Nwachukwu (Imo chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia chairman), and Turnah George (South-South Secretary) alleged constitutional violations.
Their lawsuit claimed improper convention preparations. They argued the party breached its constitution, the 1999 Constitution, and Electoral Act provisions.
The plaintiffs sought to restrain PDP leadership and INEC. They wanted the convention halted due to alleged procedural failures.
Justice Akintola’s ruling now clears the path forward. The PDP can proceed with its planned leadership transition in Ibadan next year.
