The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has commenced its governorship primary election. Delegates are now gathered in Osogbo for the crucial exercise. This follows earlier internal disputes within the party.
Party members arrived at the Adolak Hall venue early on Tuesday. They began trooping in around 11:04 am. The hall quickly filled to capacity. Heavy security personnel were visible throughout the venue. This strict security presence was maintained ahead of the voting process.
Pre-Primary Tensions and Disputed Cancellation
The primary election is proceeding despite recent political tensions. The Osun PDP leadership faced conflicting public statements just hours before the event. There was uncertainty about whether the poll would still take place.
A letter from Bisi had earlier announced the primary’s cancellation. He cited a crisis within the party’s national leadership. This was given as the reason for the halt.
However, the party’s National Organising Secretary, Theophilus Dakas Shan, quickly refuted this. He insisted the primary would hold as initially scheduled. His position ultimately prevailed, allowing the election to proceed.
Electoral Committee in Charge
The party’s Electoral Committee is fully constituted at the venue. They are presiding over the vital stage of candidate selection. Mr. Humphrey Abba chairs this committee. It also includes several senior members from various governance and institutional panels. They are:
- Chief Marc Jacob
- Chief Sanya Atofarati
- Chief Anene Azubuike
- Dr. Sunday Solarin (Secretary)
- Mrs. Scholastical Kenebi
- Mrs. Splendour Josephine
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) field monitors are also present. Their role is strictly for observation and documentation. They have maintained a visibly neutral posture throughout the engagement.
Earlier reports had suggested Governor Ademola Adeleke pulled out of the PDP primaries. These reports circulated hours before the primary committee and delegates fully arrived. Their presence confirmed the process was indeed moving forward as planned.
