Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State have converged in Osogbo. They are attending the party’s crucial governorship primary election.
Delegates began arriving at Adolak Hall by 11:04 am on Tuesday. The hall quickly filled to capacity. Tight security was visible, ensuring order ahead of the voting process.
Pre-Primary Tensions and Clarifications
This primary election followed a period of heightened political tension. Osun PDP leadership had issued conflicting statements. These statements created uncertainty about whether the poll would actually proceed.
A letter from Bisi had earlier announced the primary’s cancellation. He cited the ongoing crisis within the party’s national leadership as the reason.
However, Theophilus Dakas Shan, the party’s National Organising Secretary, swiftly refuted this. He maintained that the primary would proceed as scheduled.
Electoral Committee Constituted
At the venue, the party’s Electoral Committee was fully constituted. They were tasked with presiding over this decisive stage of candidate selection.
The committee was chaired by Humphrey Abba. Other senior members from various governance and institutional panels were also present. These included:
- Chief Marc Jacob
- Chief Sanya Atofarati
- Chief Anene Azubuike
- Dr Sunday Solarin (Secretary)
- Mrs. Scholastical Kenebi
- Mrs. Splendour Josephine
INEC Monitors on Ground
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) field monitors were also present. Their role was strictly for observation and documentation. They maintained a visibly neutral posture throughout the proceedings.
Reports had circulated earlier that Governor Ademola Adeleke had withdrawn from the PDP primaries. These reports emerged hours before the committee and delegates arrived. Nevertheless, the process proceeded as planned.
