The All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee has disqualified Senator Iyiola Omisore, a former National Secretary, and six other aspirants. They are now barred from contesting the Osun State governorship primary. The primary election is scheduled for December 13.
Their disqualification stems from identified gaps and irregularities. These issues were found within their submitted nomination documents.
Chief Obinna Uzoh chairs the committee. He urged all stakeholders to reconcile differences. The goal is to foster party unity before the primary election.
The committee presented its report on Friday. It stated that the disqualified aspirants did not meet the required standards. This was specifically in their nomination processes. While the full list of barred aspirants was not initially released, Senator Omisore’s name was confirmed.
Resolving internal party disputes is crucial, the committee emphasized. This ensures a credible primary election. It also paves the way for future electoral success in Osun State.
The primary is set for December 13. However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the formal gubernatorial election for August 8, 2026.
Party members received encouragement from the screening committee. They should rally behind valid aspirants. This helps prevent fragmented support before the polls.
The committee identified the seven disqualified aspirants. They include former Osun State Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore. Others are Babatunde Haketer Oralusi, Oyedotun Babayemi, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi, Benedict Alabi, Adegoke Rasheed Okiki, and Senator Babajide Omoworare. These aspirants failed to provide proof of sponsorship. They needed sponsorship from at least five fully registered and financially current party members. This sponsorship was required from each Local Government Area in Osun State. This requirement is outlined in Articles 9.3(i) and 31.2(ii) of the APC Constitution. It is also detailed in Paragraph 6(c) of the party guidelines.
Only two aspirants received approval to participate. They are Mulikat Abiola Jimoh and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.
Screening Process and Findings
The committee’s report detailed its transparent screening process:
First, all forms, declarations, and supporting materials underwent thorough review. This verified their authenticity. It also checked for compliance with statutory and party requirements.
Second, each aspirant participated in a structured interview. Here, the committee assessed their knowledge of party rules. Personal preparedness, adherence to nomination requirements, and overall suitability were also evaluated. This comprehensive methodology aimed for a transparent, fair, and objective evaluation.
The report also highlighted a petition received by the committee. It came from the Osun APC Renewal Group. The petition called for the disqualification of two aspirants. It alleged they failed to meet mandatory nomination requirements. These requirements are specified in the APC Constitution and party guidelines for the governorship primary.
Upon review, the committee found the petition’s issues “weighty, substantial, and relevant to the integrity of the screening process.” They resolved that concerns “should not be applied selectively” to ensure fairness and transparency.
It further confirmed that Mulikat Abiola Jimoh and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji met all requirements. This includes proper nomination by the necessary number of registered, financially current party members. This support was confirmed from each Local Government Area.
Conversely, the committee reiterated that the seven disqualified aspirants failed to meet the mandatory nomination requirement. This specifically refers to sponsorship by five fully registered and financially up-to-date members. Such sponsorship is required from each Local Government Area. This contravenes Articles 9.3(i) and 31.2(ii) of the APC Constitution and Paragraph 6(c) of the 2025 Governorship Primary Guidelines.
Recommendations for Party Unity
The committee highlighted the continued deep division within the APC structure in Osun State.
The report recommended immediate action. It urged the National Leadership to establish a robust reconciliation mechanism. This aims to unify all factions and groups. A harmonized party is vital for a credible primary and success in the gubernatorial election.
Furthermore, the committee advised the party to foster broad inclusion. Political appointments, party offices, and campaign roles should be evenly distributed. This ensures representation across all zones, blocs, and interest groups within the State. It aims to minimize feelings of marginalization.
The committee concluded by expressing profound gratitude to the NWC and APC leadership. They affirmed their unwavering commitment to the party’s principles of fairness and credibility.
