The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has suspended its 2026 governorship primaries. The primary was initially scheduled for December 2, 2025. This decision stems from an escalating leadership crisis within the national party.
Hon. Sunday Bisi, the Osun PDP Chairman, announced this in Osogbo on Monday. He held a press briefing to explain the situation. Bisi stated that internal turmoil at the national level made crucial statutory processes impossible. These processes are necessary for the primaries.
Chairman Bisi first clarified Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke’s eligibility. Governor Adeleke had fulfilled all requirements to participate in the primary election.
Chairman Bisi confirmed Governor Adeleke had met all criteria. He purchased and submitted the necessary forms on time. The Governor was also screened and cleared without issues. He received a Certificate of Clearance as per party rules.
The crisis escalated further, the chairman noted. This included “the suspension and counter-suspension of key national officers.” This situation crippled the party’s ability to hold certain congresses. Ad-hoc ward and local government congresses were scheduled for November 24 and 29.
“These are the very congresses where delegates to the primaries are elected,” Bisi stressed. He added that several disputes are now before courts nationwide.
Without these delegates, holding a proper primary election is impossible, he concluded.
“It has become inevitable, indeed unavoidable,” the state party chairman declared. The PDP governorship primaries were initially set for Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025. They can no longer hold as scheduled.
