The Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its governorship primaries. These primaries were initially set for December 2, 2025. The suspension is due to a deepening leadership crisis at the national level.
Hon. Sunday Bisi, the State Chairman, announced this at a press briefing in Osogbo on Monday. He explained that internal turmoil within the national leadership made it impossible. They could not complete the legal steps needed for the primaries.
Adeleke’s Eligibility Confirmed
Bisi first clarified Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke’s eligibility. He stated that the Governor had met all requirements to participate in the primary election.
According to Bisi, Governor Adeleke “purchased and submitted the expression of interest and nomination forms within the set timeframe.” He added that the Governor “was screened, cleared without reservations, and received a Certificate of Clearance.” This was done as per party rules.
Crisis Halts Congresses
The chairman noted the crisis had worsened. This was evident in “the suspension and counter-suspension of key national officers.” This escalation hampered the party’s ability to hold ad-hoc ward and local government congresses. These congresses were planned for November 24 and 29.
Bisi emphasized, “These congresses are crucial for electing delegates to the primaries.” He also mentioned that many of these disputes are now in various courts nationwide. He explained that without elected delegates, a proper primary election cannot take place.
“Given these circumstances, it is now inevitable and unavoidable,” the state party chairman declared. “The PDP governorship primaries, initially scheduled for Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025, cannot proceed as planned.”
Governor Adeleke May Withdraw
Bisi then made a significant revelation. Governor Adeleke, the sole aspirant who bought and submitted nomination forms, might withdraw from the race. This could happen if the party’s crisis continues.
He stated, “Information available to me suggests that Governor Ademola Adeleke may no longer be interested in seeking the PDP’s nomination for the 2026 Osun Gubernatorial Election.” This holds “unless a resolution recognized by INEC is achieved within the INEC timeline.”
Efforts to Resolve Impasse
Despite these challenges, the PDP chairman assured members that efforts are ongoing to resolve the impasse.
He affirmed, “We assure you that party leadership, at both state and national levels, is working tirelessly.” Their goal is “to find a lawful, workable, and timely solution to the current challenges.”
Bisi emphasized that the briefing reflected the party’s commitment to transparency. It aimed to keep Osun residents fully informed.
