Ondo State House of Assembly Speaker Olamide Oladiji has alleged that attempts to impeach him originate from lawmakers’ unresolved grievances against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. The declaration follows a legislative crisis triggered by protests over the state’s supplementary budget.
Tensions erupted when legislators staged a walkout opposing Governor Aiyedatiwa’s ₦531 billion supplementary appropriation. Protesting lawmakers accused Oladiji of rushing the bill despite documented shortcomings in the 2025 budget implementation.
Addressing journalists in Akure, Speaker Oladiji dismissed the impeachment efforts. He stated, “This impeachment plot represents a clear case of misplaced priorities. Our legislative rules outline proper executive engagement procedures.”
Oladiji revealed that the dissenting lawmakers have consistently absented themselves from assembly proceedings. “Most are currently outside Nigeria,” he disclosed. “Their demands from the governor shouldn’t obstruct critical legislative functions.”
The speaker emphasized that 14 assembly members recently affirmed confidence in his leadership. He maintained that tying legislative duties to political demands undermines governance. “We must address requests maturely without disrupting government operations,” Oladiji asserted.
Oladiji pledged to continue upholding constitutional responsibilities without political interference. “Our assembly operates strictly according to established rules,” he affirmed. “Budget considerations shouldn’t be weaponized to advance personal agendas.”
The speaker reiterated his stance on separating legislative duties from political negotiations. “Supplementary budget approval must proceed without being held hostage to unrelated demands,” Oladiji concluded.
