Two-time undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usik has dismissed rumors linking him to a potential bout with British prospect Moses Itauma. Usik stated that while he respects Itauma’s talent, the young boxer is not yet ready for such a high-level contest.
In a recent interview with Ready To Fight, Usik addressed the speculation, stating, “No, I will not fight Itauma. He is young and often teases me, but he has also stated himself that he doesn’t fight grandpas.” This was said in a lighthearted manner, as Usik is currently 38 years old.
Usik, who holds all five major world titles, last fought in July when he secured a stunning fifth-round knockout against Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium. Since then, he has been recovering from a back injury that has delayed his return to the ring.
Despite the injury, Usik confirmed that he has no plans to retire soon. He stated, “I will fight until I’m 41. After that, I plan to build a sports academy where I will train and also train others.”
The identity of Usik’s next opponent remains uncertain, with ongoing negotiations keeping details limited. There has been discussion of a potential WBO title defense against the winner of the upcoming Joseph Parker versus Fabio Wardley match, but nothing has been finalized.
Moses Itauma’s name entered the conversation following his impressive first-round knockout of Dillian Whyte on August 16 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. That performance caught the attention of Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh, who publicly suggested a potential Usik-Itauma matchup. Itauma, who is unbeaten in 13 fights with 11 knockouts, welcomed the idea, calling it a “win-win” opportunity even in defeat.
For now, Usik remains focused on his recovery and future plans, which include continuing his celebrated career for a few more years before transitioning to training and development within the sport.
