The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has received high praise from the Oil and Gas Watchdogs Network. The group lauded NUPRC and its Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe. They commended the “transparent, responsible, and judicious” management of the Frontier Exploration Fund.
According to the network, every allocation has been used strictly in line with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
Comrade Boma Kenule signed a statement released on Sunday in Port Harcourt. The coalition stated the need to “set the record straight.” This follows recent public discussions regarding the statutory fund.
The group emphasized the Commission’s commendable discipline and clear purpose. Ongoing activities in frontier basins reflect NUPRC’s commitment. These include seismic acquisition, exploratory drilling, and derisking campaigns. Such efforts aim to boost Nigeria’s oil and gas reserves. They also protect the nation’s long-term energy security.
“Every Kobo Accounted For,” Says Watchdog Group
“The NUPRC, led by Engr. Gbenga Komolafe, has shown a rare commitment to accountability,” the statement read. It highlighted “sectoral discipline in the management of the Frontier Exploration Fund.”
“Every kobo has been channelled towards what the PIA intended. This means stimulating exploration in frontier basins. It also involves derisking new terrains. Prospective hydrocarbon fields receive necessary technical attention. This is a model of responsible regulation,” the group added.
The Oil and Gas Watchdogs Network based its assessment on field monitoring. They also engaged with industry operators. These operators confirmed NUPRC’s methodical approach.
The network stressed that Nigeria cannot afford waste or policy inconsistency. Global capital for fossil exploration is currently shrinking. Prudent management is therefore critical.
Komolafe’s Leadership Restores Confidence
“Komolafe’s leadership has brought renewed credibility to the frontier exploration framework,” the coalition noted. “He has consistently prioritised efficiency. He ensures contractors meet benchmarks. He also maintains clear engagement with host communities and state governments.”
The group stated that the responsible use of the Fund has restored confidence. This is crucial for pre-development exploration. It is a key requirement for safeguarding Nigeria’s future production capacity.
“Those who follow frontier basin work understand its demands. Exploration is capital-intensive, time-bound, and technically demanding. NUPRC’s prudent handling guarantees investments go exactly where they should. Stakeholders continue to express confidence in the Commission’s technical leadership,” the statement affirmed.
Call for Sustained Autonomy and Caution Against Misinformation
The group appealed to the Federal Government. They urged continued reinforcement of the Commission’s autonomy and operational capacity. NUPRC’s role is central to transparency. It also prevents misuse of statutory funds.
They also warned media houses and political actors. Misrepresenting official remarks on the Fund could distract from recorded progress. Inaccurate reporting could hinder sector development.
“The sector needs clarity, not noise. It is important to acknowledge institutions performing their duties diligently. The NUPRC has kept faith with the PIA and the Nigerian people. This should be recognized,” the statement concluded.
The Oil and Gas Watchdogs Network reaffirmed its commitment. They will continue monitoring regulatory compliance across the sector. They pledged to spotlight agencies upholding transparency. Their goal is to protect public resources and strengthen Nigeria’s energy future.
