Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, the factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), has declared his group the authentic leadership of the PDP. He dismissed claims of illegitimacy regarding his faction’s formation.
During an Arise News interview, Ohuabunwa explained that his faction emerged after the previous BoT led by Senator Adolphus Wabara compromised neutrality. “When one group suspended the other, the BoT became complicit by taking sides,” he stated.
Ohuabunwa emphasized constitutional compliance: “Our BoT was formed properly with members sharing our vision. More members will join once they recognize our commitment to reforming the party.”
The faction aims to restore order and constitutional discipline within the PDP. Ohuabunwa noted, “We must reconcile the party after prolonged constitutional violations. Earlier BoT intervention could have prevented factional divisions.”
Regarding INEC’s recognition of Acting Chairman Damagum, Ohuabunwa acknowledged prior correspondence but maintained, “INEC’s stance reflects pre-existing arrangements, not current realities.” He described his group as the “conscience of the party” dedicated to rebuilding a disciplined, constitutionally-guided PDP.
Ohuabunwa concluded: “Yes, we are a faction, but our mission is vital – to restore the PDP’s original democratic principles through constitutional adherence.”
