Yunusa Tanko is the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement. He confirmed Peter Obi’s readiness to contest the 2027 Nigerian presidency. Obi was the Labour Party’s flagbearer in 2023.
Tanko also serves as the spokesman for Obi’s supporters. He spoke to Sunday Punch on Friday night. This interview followed reports of a potential alliance. The alliance reportedly involved former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s camp. These discussions are ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obidient Movement’s Stance on 2027 Election
Tanko addressed these speculations. He believes a strong Southern candidate is crucial. This is the best way to defeat President Tinubu. However, he demanded clarity from Atiku’s team. They must state their expectations from Peter Obi. This must happen before any formal discussions begin.
Tanko explained their current focus. “We are looking for a leader,” he said. “This leader must have the capacity to move around the country. They must deal with the issues effectively.”
He further elaborated on their requirements. “Nigerians need a president with mobility,” Tanko stated. “They also need depth in knowing what is wrong with the country. If we team up, our joint objectives must be clear. If that discussion is on the table, then we can begin to talk.”
Tanko asserted that securing Nigeria requires a capable leader. “Someone who has the ability to fix things,” he added. “Peter Obi possesses these qualities.” He emphasized the current political landscape. “The Presidency is already in the South. We need to support Mr. Peter Obi. He should complete the four years for the South. This is the continuation Nigeria needs now.”
Tanko confirmed another important detail. Obi is committed to serving only a single term if elected. This commitment aims to streamline governance and focus on national development.
