Former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, states that ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo returned $20,000. This sum was for Obasanjo’s travel during Fayose’s 65th birthday. The repayment follows renewed tensions between the two politicians.
Political Rift Rekindled
Fayose and Obasanjo have a nearly two-decade-long political disagreement. A brief reconciliation attempt occurred during Fayose’s birthday. However, Obasanjo’s comments at the event reignited their dispute. He called Fayose “not the best” of his proteges. He still acknowledged some political successes. Fayose strongly objected to these remarks.
The Purpose of the Funds
Fayose discussed the invitation in a recent AF24 News interview. He reached out to Obasanjo through Osita Chidoka, a mutual friend and former aviation minister. This was to invite Obasanjo to his birthday.
Fayose stressed his call was not an apology.
He said, “I never called to apologize. I did not wrong him. He removed me from office. He should be the one apologizing.”
Funds Returned After Public Spat
Fayose voiced frustration over Obasanjo’s public comments.
He recalled, “We took pictures. All was in good faith. I gave him $20,000. How can you accept money then criticize that person?”
He confirmed the money’s return. This happened after he sent a firm message to Obasanjo.
He stated, “I wrote to him. He returned my $20,000. I thank him for that. It is now with me. I have converted it to naira.”
Request for N10 Million Contribution Refund
Fayose also recalled an old political issue. In 2005, 30 PDP governors contributed N10 million each. This was for the Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.
He insists on getting his contribution back. “I just want my N10 million,” he stated. “Once I receive it, I will confirm it. You cannot insult people and also take their money. That is deceit.”
