The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo. National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, led the delegation. They sought strategic counsel from the elder statesman. The meeting took place at Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
During the consultative visit, Obasanjo praised the current leadership. He commended their efforts to stabilize and reposition the party. He also urged them to remain steadfast in their mission. Instilling discipline within the party was a key point. Obasanjo emphasized that party members must strictly adhere to rules and regulations.
“Things are not beyond repair,” Obasanjo stated. He encouraged the committee to “Soldier on.” He added, “You are doing very well.” The former president advised diligent and tactful work.
He then stressed the importance of a strong and focused opposition. This is vital for any democracy, he noted. Obasanjo charged the NWC to prioritize the nation’s interest. He believes current national challenges demand constructive roles from all political actors. Placing the country first is crucial, he added.
Obasanjo further offered his wealth of experience. He also provided political insights to the leadership. He affirmed his readiness to offer guidance when needed. The former President also criticized the Federal Government’s current direction. He stated, “They can’t take Nigeria anywhere good.”
Responding to these encouraging words, Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki expressed profound gratitude. He spoke on behalf of the entire NWC. “Your continued support and wisdom mean a great deal to us, Sir,” Turaki said. He added, “Your advice and great counsel are always very helpful.” Turaki affirmed their reliance on Obasanjo’s guidance. They will use it to tirelessly rebuild and unify the party. “We came here specifically to tap into your experience,” he explained. He also sought Obasanjo’s invaluable perspective on the party’s future and the state of our nation.
Turaki then assured the former President of his leadership’s dedication. They are committed to maintaining internal peace. Promoting genuine reconciliation is another goal. The NWC also aims to prepare the party to meet Nigerians’ expectations.
