Katsina United faces severe sanctions from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following violent incidents during their recent home fixture. The club has been fined ₦9 million and ordered to play all remaining home matches behind closed doors at Jos’ New Jos Stadium.
NPFL’s Punitive Measures
The disciplinary actions come after Saturday’s match against Barau FC at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium descended into chaos. NPFL officials confirmed multiple rule violations, citing inadequate security and loss of crowd control. Unauthorized persons breached restricted zones while spectators hurled dangerous objects onto the pitch, injuring Barau FC players.
League authorities condemned the crowd behavior as “conduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute.” The ₦9 million penalty includes ₦3 million for fan misconduct, ₦2 million for security failures, and ₦4 million compensation for Barau FC’s medical costs, vehicle repairs, and other damages.
Club’s Strong Rebuttal
Katsina United has vehemently denied the NPFL’s allegations before the ruling. Club media director Nasir Gide dismissed reports of violence as “entirely baseless,” calling them a smear campaign. Gide insisted security maintained order throughout the match with no pitch invasions occurring.
“Katsina United remains committed to professionalism and fair play,” Gide stated. The club has demanded media retractions and threatened legal action against outlets publishing what they term false reports. Katsina United has 48 hours to formally appeal the NPFL’s decision.
