Kano State’s New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) chairman Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa claims the All Progressives Congress (APC) lacks strength to win Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. He alleges APC must rely on Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s influence for victory.
APC’s Alleged Weakness and Kwankwaso Factor
Speaking at NNPP’s state secretariat, Dungurawa stated APC lost focus nationally and locally. He attributed this to their outreach to Kwankwaso. “APC members appear weak and confused,” Dungurawa declared. “They know 2027 victory requires Kwankwaso. But he prioritizes Nigerians’ welfare.”
He dismissed claims of political negotiations. Dungurawa maintained Kwankwaso’s recent meetings were coincidental. The chairman stressed no formal alliance talks are occurring.
2023 Performance and Party Prospects
Addressing Kwankwaso’s 500,000 Kano votes in 2023, Dungurawa cited challenges. He noted NNPP was merely seven months old then. Poor ballot printing and limited voter awareness affected results. Still, NNPP secured legislative seats across four states.
The redesigned party logo and growing acceptance will transform 2027 elections, he asserted. Dungurawa expressed confidence in NNPP’s rebranded structure.
Party Stability and Leadership
Dungurawa confirmed NNPP’s internal strength ahead of congresses. Most executives will retain positions under party rules. “Our constitution allows two terms barring defection or disciplinary issues,” he explained. “Continuity and loyalty matter.”
By-elections will fill vacancies left by three deceased councillors next month. These cover Garin, Dala, and Doguwa LGAs.
Governance Assessment in Kano
The chairman praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s 2026 budget. He highlighted unprecedented focus on education and agriculture. Dungurawa also noted visible infrastructure progress statewide.
Contrastingly, he criticized ex-governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration. Dungurawa accused it of educational neglect. Unpaid scholarships and abandoned pensioners were mentioned.
Addressing Defections
Regarding NNPP defections, Dungurawa downplayed concerns. Only one federal lawmaker left voluntarily, he claimed. Others were already suspended before departing. “NNPP resembles a royal suite,” he remarked. “Some may downgrade temporarily but will recognize the difference.”
He dismissed reports about Jamilu Kabir Bichi’s defection. “Bichi was never truly NNPP,” Dungurawa stated.
Future Outlook
Dungurawa urged party unity ahead of 2027 elections. He projected a stronger, more strategic NNPP. With growing national acceptance, the party expects formidable electoral impact.
