A Nigerian woman recently transitioned from Catholicism to Islam. She gained attention by sharing the meaning of her newly adopted name. The woman, known as Maryam Kenechi on TikTok, expressed joy in her conversion. She stated she discovered true faith within Islam.

Insights into Her Spiritual Journey
Her viral TikTok post explained a fascinating discovery. After converting, she realized her new name, Maryam, matched her previous name, Mary. Both names hold identical meanings in English. She expressed comfort being called either.
The specific reasons for her conversion were not shared publicly. The post’s comment section quickly filled with various reactions and discussions from users.
She shared her personal reflection:
“I didn’t simply convert and change my name. My birth name was UGWU KENECHI MODESTA MARY. Upon embracing Islam, I found that ‘Mary’ and ‘Maryam’ are essentially the same. One is English, the other Arabic. Both carry the identical meaning. So, you can call me Maryam or Mary; they are interchangeable. I am still that Igbo Muslimah. I come from a Christian home. I found profound faith in Islam.”
