Nigerian sprinting sensation Godson Brume has pleaded guilty in the United States. The charge is unlawful possession of a firearm. Brume held a non-immigrant visa at the time of the incident.
Brume, once the fourth-fastest man in Nigeria’s history, now faces severe consequences. He could receive up to 15 years in prison. A fine of up to $250,000 is also possible. Additionally, he faces three years of supervised release. Deportation back to Nigeria after serving his sentence is a strong possibility.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred in February 2025 in Baton Rouge. Brume was at his apartment with another young woman. His former girlfriend then arrived with their infant child.
Reports indicate an argument began outside the apartment. During the confrontation, Brume discharged a Glock 43X pistol. The child was present during this event. Moments later, the woman opened the apartment door. She saw Brume with the other woman, sparking a second dispute. This conflict also moved outside.
Investigators stated Brume fired the weapon multiple times. This happened as the mother of his child tried to leave the scene. Officers later found several bullet impacts. These were on the walls of the apartment complex. This shows the seriousness of the incident.
Authorities further allege Brume damaged the woman’s phone. He then took the child. Brume also threw the firearm into nearby shrubs. Deputies eventually detained him.
A Promising Career Derailed
This case marks a dramatic fall for Brume. He was once celebrated for his speed and potential on the track. Brume boasts a personal best of 9.90 seconds in the 100 metres. This time places him among Nigeria’s fastest sprinters ever.
He secured a silver medal at the 2023 NCAA Championships. That same year, he was part of the LSU 4x100m relay team. They set an NCAA record of 37.90 seconds, winning the national title.
Godson Brume’s sentencing date has not yet been announced.
