Honourable Jimi Benson leads the House of Representatives Committee on Defence. He recently explained why Nigeria’s terrorism financiers cannot face public trials.
Benson stated that many of these financiers have been under close scrutiny. This investigation has spanned a significant period. He shared this information on Arise Television’s ‘Prime Time’ programme.
Why Public Exposure Is Not Possible
The lawmaker reassured the public about government efforts. They are tirelessly tackling widespread insecurity across the country. Some financiers operate locally. Others are based internationally, he noted.
However, the government cannot disclose their identities. This decision stems from crucial national security reasons. Benson emphasized the sensitivity of these ongoing investigations.
“Terrorism financiers in Nigeria cannot face public trials,” Benson directly stated. “Many have been under scrutiny for a very long time.”
He further clarified the term “scrutiny.” It means these individuals have been identified and processed. “They include both local and international actors,” he added.
“The government has achieved significant progress recently,” Benson affirmed. “But for security reasons, the public cannot know their identities.” He highlighted that many involved in financing now hesitate.
“I assure you, work is actively in progress,” he noted. “A responsible government will address these individuals appropriately. This will happen at the right time.”
Benson concluded by stressing the government’s commitment. “We are actively tracking and trying these individuals,” he said. “We also receive substantial international assistance. This helps bring them to justice.”
