The cost of essential food items continues its upward trend across Nigerian markets. This persistent rise is putting immense pressure on households already grappling with economic hardships. Many families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford basic meals.
A recent market survey shows that several staple foods remain expensive. This situation forces many households to change their eating habits. They might reduce meal portions or opt for more affordable substitutes.
Cooking Oil Remains Pricey
Cooking oil is a daily necessity in most Nigerian homes. Its prices remain significantly high. A 5-litre container of palm oil now sells for about ₦10,000. Groundnut oil costs around ₦3,200 per litre. Traders explain these prices are due to supply chain issues, rising transportation costs, and increased demand.
Staple Grains and Swallow Foods
Rice is a major staple food nationwide. A 50kg bag now costs approximately ₦52,250. Many consumers describe this price as simply unaffordable. Other swallow foods are also affected. A medium-sized Poundo Yam meal is priced at ₦3,500. The bigger pack goes for ₦7,000.
Traditional Soup Ingredients See Hikes
Ingredients for traditional soups have also seen price hikes. One modu of egusi now costs about ₦2,700. A paint bucket of garri sells for roughly ₦1,200. These increases make even basic meal preparation more expensive for families.
Volatile Fresh Produce Prices
Fresh produce prices continue to be unstable. A heap of tomatoes currently sells for about ₦3,500. Pepper is around ₦2,500 per heap. Market women cite seasonal shortages and spoilage during transit as key factors. These issues consistently drive prices upwards.
Processed Food Items Not Spared
Processed food items have also recorded noticeable price increases. A roll pack of cornflakes now sells for ₦1,300. Spaghetti, a common household food, is priced as high as ₦18,600 per pack in some markets.
