Arise TV host Oseni Rufai has revealed the monthly earnings of Nigerian ambassadors. This disclosure follows the recent submission of three ambassadorial nominees by the government.
The list of nominees includes notable figures. Former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Mahmood Yakubu is one. Reno Omokri and former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi were also nominated.
Understanding the Ambassadorial Salary Structure
Rufai shared these details in a recent tweet. He explained that ambassadors’ salaries fall under a specific framework. This is known as the Consolidated Diplomatic, Consular, and Foreign Service Cadre Salary Structure.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs uses this structure. Ambassadors are typically placed at the highest grade level, usually GL 17. They also receive various allowances, especially when posted abroad.
Rufai noted that the basic pay might seem modest. This is when compared to what diplomats earn in some other countries. However, allowances form a substantial part of their complete remuneration package.
Several factors can influence an ambassador’s overall pay. These include the specific country of assignment and their experience level. Fluctuations in exchange rates also play a role.
Basic Monthly Pay for Ambassadors
Oseni Rufai stated the basic monthly pay for a Nigerian ambassador. It ranges from approximately ₦800,000 to ₦1,200,000. This translates to a yearly basic earning of between ₦9.6 million and ₦14.4 million.
These figures are consistent with the earnings of other top officers at the same grade level within the public service. They also reflect adjustments made for inflation and the proposed 2025 minimum wage of ₦70,000.
Allowances Significantly Boost Total Earnings Abroad
Rufai further clarified that the basic salary alone does not represent the full extent of an ambassador’s earnings. Diplomats posted to foreign countries receive additional financial support.
These allowances are crucial. They help cover high living costs, hardship differentials, and expenses related to official duties abroad. Consequently, these allowances significantly increase their total take-home pay.
Depending on their country of service, an ambassador’s total monthly earnings can range from ₦2 million to ₦5 million. This comprehensive package ensures Nigerian envoys can maintain their standard of living. It also allows them to effectively perform their duties overseas.
