Nigeria has officially submitted a bid to host the 2031 African Games. This marks its first attempt since Abuja hosted the event in 2003. The bid went to the African Union Sports Council (AUSC).
The Nigeria Sports Commission confirmed this on Friday. Officials presented the bid during key meetings with the AUSC. They highlighted Nigeria’s strong preparedness. Our nation boasts robust infrastructure. We also have extensive experience in staging major international competitions.
Mainasara Ilo delivered the bid presentation. He is a renowned sports broadcaster and administrator. Ilo emphasized Nigeria’s technical capacity. He also praised its strong organizational record. He reaffirmed the nation’s readiness. Nigeria aims to host a modern, inclusive, and impactful African Games.
A Track Record of Successful Hosting
Nigeria’s bid is strongly supported by its recent hosting track record. Our nation has successfully staged many continental and regional tournaments. These include the CAA Africa U18 and U20 Athletics Championships. We also hosted the Africa Karate Championship. Other events were the ITTF Africa Youth Table Tennis Championship and the African Armwrestling Championship. The Badminton National Open, West Africa Para Games, and African Cadet and Junior Taekwondo Championship also feature on the list.
Significant Economic and Diplomatic Benefits
Recent events have brought significant economic impact. The CAA U18 and U20 Africa Athletics Championships proved this. It boosted over 5,000 small and medium enterprises. This came from increased commercial activity in host cities.
