Nigeria’s Flamingos secured their spot in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup knockout stage with a commanding 4-0 triumph over Samoa in Rabat on Saturday. The emphatic victory rescued Nigeria from early elimination after consecutive defeats in their opening matches.
Facing elimination following losses to Canada and France, the 2022 bronze medalists delivered their strongest performance when it mattered most. Their dominant display ensured progression as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
Forward Queen Joseph emerged as the match hero, netting two first-half goals to claim the FIFA Player of the Match award. She opened Nigeria’s account in the 13th minute after connecting with captain Shakirat Moshood’s precise pass and lofting the ball over goalkeeper Grace Ae.
Samoa’s goalkeeper made a spectacular save to deny Chisom Nwachukwu minutes later. But Nigeria doubled their lead when Moshood converted a penalty after Holly Leapai’s handball offense in the box.
The Flamingos extended their advantage in the 34th minute through brilliant teamwork. Nguemo Terlumun dazzled down the right flank before setting up Joseph for her second goal with a clinical finish.
Joseph nearly completed her hat-trick before halftime, but Ae produced another excellent save following a combination play with Mariam Yahaya.
Nigeria maintained pressure after the break, earning another penalty when Terlumun was fouled in the area. Moshood stepped up again, but this time Ae guessed correctly to make the save.
Defender Azeezat Oduntan sealed the victory in the 67th minute with an exceptional curling shot from a tight angle. Goalkeeper Sylvia Echefu preserved the clean sheet with two crucial late saves.
In the concurrent Group D match, Canada defeated France 2-1 to top the group standings. Melisa Kekic opened the scoring before an own goal extended Canada’s lead. Lea Morissaint’s header provided France’s consolation despite Reed Tingley’s late dismissal.
