NFF President Ibrahim Gusau has strongly denied any federation involvement. He addressed claims regarding the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speculations arose after the squad list was announced. Critics suggested influential NFF members pressured for specific player selections.
Addressing the Speculations
Gusau spoke during a radio interview. He joined former Nigeria international Segun Odegbami on Eagle 102.5 FM. The NFF boss warned fans and commentators. He urged them to avoid spreading unverified accusations.
“People must be careful,” Gusau stated. “This applies especially to social media.” He described the online environment as “highly polluted.” He added, “A lot of agents are everywhere.”
Gusau’s Stance on Non-Interference
“I will never tell a coach who to pick,” Gusau affirmed. “Since becoming President, I have not stayed in the same hotel as the national team.” He emphasized, “I do not want to be a distraction.”
Gusau reiterated that team selection is solely the coaching crew’s duty. The federation deliberately maintains its distance. This allows the technical team to work freely. They face no pressure or interference.
