Starting Saturday, November 1, NBA officials will begin wearing communication headsets during games. The league confirmed this innovation aims to enhance real-time coordination between referees, the NBA replay center, and fellow officials.
Developed with the National Basketball Referees Association (NBRA), this system rolls out in two stages. Its primary goals include improving decision accuracy while minimizing unnecessary game interruptions.
Phase One: Initial Implementation
During this initial trial phase, referees will clip small earpieces to their uniforms. Officials may use these devices only during stoppages like instant replay reviews. This allows the league to assess how the technology impacts game flow and consistency.
Phase Two: Potential Expansion
If results prove positive, phase two launches in January. Referees would then wear earpieces throughout entire games. This enables constant communication with both the replay center and court officials. The extended trial will continue through February’s All-Star break.
The technology underwent testing during NBA preseason games over two years. It was also trialed at NBA Summer League events (2023-2025) and G League Winter Showcases (2022-2024).
The NBA anticipates this communication upgrade will streamline officiating processes. Benefits include faster decisions, improved consistency, and enhanced referee support during critical game moments.
