The Labour Party (LP) in Nasarawa State has elected new executive members. These officials will now lead the party for the next four years. The election took place on Saturday, marking a significant step for the state chapter.
Leadership’s Focus on Unity and Future Elections
John Shammah, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, addressed the press after the state congress. He confirmed the election process received full approval. Both the national LP leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) endorsed it.
Shammah stressed the party’s renewed focus. Resolving internal issues remains a top priority. This is especially crucial as the 2027 general elections approach.
“The party faced many challenges,” Shammah stated. “These issues were man-made. To resolve them, we must unite and build a strong, united house.”
He added that the newly elected consensus candidates must lead with unity. “I am happy that we discussed issues frankly,” he shared. “Many people expressed themselves truthfully. We all believe the party must move forward.”
New Executive Council Members
The new executive council includes several key figures. Alexander Ombugu emerged as the Chairman. Other officials elected were: Isiaka Okpu (Financial Secretary); Ablaku Anthony (Public Relations Officer); and Emmanuel Ayaka (Auditor).
Hanatu Giwa is the Women Leader, and Iliya Timidige serves as Youth Leader. Silas Yileni is the Organising Secretary, while Barr. Edogo Zakari holds the position of Legal Adviser.
INEC Confirms Due Process
Mohammed Hamza represented INEC at the congress. He serves as the acting Head of Election and Political Party Monitoring in Nasarawa State. Hamza expressed satisfaction with the electoral process.
He noted that all procedures followed the party’s constitution. The Electoral Act and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria were also strictly adhered to. “We monitored the Labour Party Congress,” Hamza stated. “This aligns with the Electoral Act. We observed that all procedures were followed.”
“I wish the new executive members well,” he concluded. “I urge them to abide by the electoral umpire’s rules and regulations.”
Chairman Ombugu’s Vision and Commitment
In his acceptance speech, new Chairman Alexander Ombugu expressed profound gratitude. He thanked the national leadership, state congress delegates, and all supporters for their trust.
Ombugu appealed for broad support from members and supporters. This includes those across all 13 Local Government Areas. He seeks their cooperation to ensure the party’s growth and success in Nasarawa State.
“As party chairman, I will run an open-door policy,” Ombugu pledged. “Every member will be carried along, and all opinions will be respected.”
“The 2027 elections are nearing,” he noted. “My team and I will work diligently to win elections in Nasarawa State. This includes the crucial governorship election.”
