The Minister of Regional Affairs, Uba Maigeri, has strongly denied diverting ₦16.5 billion. This fund was earmarked for rebuilding the collapsed Namnai Bridge in Taraba State’s Gassol Local Government Area. The accuser also claimed the minister sought his arrest. This was reportedly for criticizing the government’s project management.
The accuser, Imam, alleged that Maigeri secretly obtained a directive. This directive purportedly authorized the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to detain him.
Minister’s Counsel Dismisses Claims
Responding to journalists in Jalingo on Friday, the minister’s legal counsel, Ibrahim Effiong, dismissed these claims. He branded them as baseless and malicious. Effiong expressed worry about people “spreading rumours they cannot justify.” He affirmed that Maigeri, a respected legal professional, had acted honourably.
While Nigerians have freedom of expression, Effiong cautioned against its misuse. “Social media should not be used to disparage others,” he stated. “Serious allegations require proof when challenged.”
Lawsuit Filed for Justice
Effiong confirmed the minister has filed a lawsuit seeking justice. He praised Maigeri and his supporters for choosing legal avenues. He also urged Nigerians to use their freedom of expression responsibly. This must align with constitutional guidelines.
“The court is now handling this matter,” Effiong declared. He called on Imam to present himself and substantiate his claims. Maigeri, like all citizens, has the right to legal recourse, he added.
“The law’s reach is extensive,” Effiong emphasized. “We must understand that rights come with limits.” He advocated for increased respect towards public officials. The minister’s handling of this dispute showed commendable restraint. It also demonstrated his commitment to due process. “Nigeria would thrive if all citizens emulated the minister’s conduct,” he concluded.
