Popular media personality, Dorcas Shola Fapson, widely known as Ms. DSF, has offered significant counsel to Nigerians. She advises those earning a decent income locally to carefully weigh their options before considering a move abroad for work, a phenomenon commonly referred to as ‘japa’.
Speaking on a podcast with Jay On Air, Ms. DSF highlighted a crucial point. Overseas jobs, she explained, are not always as financially rewarding as they might initially appear. She pointed out that while jobs like cleaning or driving may pay in foreign currency, such as pounds, the high cost of living can be prohibitive.
The expenses for rent and public transportation in many foreign countries are substantial. These costs can make it incredibly difficult to save money, even with a seemingly higher hourly wage. Ms. DSF suggested that a comfortable salary in Nigeria could potentially offer more stability and opportunities than an unfamiliar and often demanding job overseas.
She further illustrated her point by sharing her father’s early struggles after moving abroad. “He worked tirelessly, juggling multiple jobs,” she recounted. “These included taxi driving, security, and even accounting. His aim was to provide for our family. Yet, he often earned barely enough to meet their needs.”
Ms. DSF acknowledged the allure of earning in foreign currency. However, she quickly cautioned that this often demands immense hard work and unforeseen sacrifices. Many individuals relocating abroad do not anticipate these challenges.
Her conclusion stressed the importance of thorough evaluation. Nigerians should carefully consider both the potential challenges and the rewards before making the decision to leave the country for work. She reiterated that opportunities at home might offer a better quality of life than the expected hustle abroad.
