Popular comedian Nelson Uchechukwu, known as Mr Jollof, has cautioned Nigerians against welcoming U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statements about Nigeria’s security situation. The social media personality questioned why Nigerians would trust a leader who previously made derogatory comments about Africa.
Mr Jollof expressed concern that foreign interference might worsen Nigeria’s challenges rather than resolve them. He predicted potential consequences including economic sanctions, financial blockades, and military operations that could lead to widespread hunger and instability.
“A President that once called an entire continent a sh*thole is suddenly interested in cleaning your own specific type of s**t. And you think he now perceives you differently. Dey play o.”
“Nigerians think Trump is coming to bomb Boko Haram and go! First they’d sanction Nigeria and do an economic blockade. Many will die from hunger. Then he’d finance terrorists to weaken the army. Then he’d invade, massacre, and occupy.”
These warnings followed Trump’s threat of military intervention in Nigeria, where he alleged Christians were being killed by radical Islamists. The U.S. president claimed he directed military preparations for possible action and would designate Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious freedom violations.
Trump warned that America might suspend all aid to Nigeria and “go in guns blazing” if killings continue. His genocide allegations against Christians sparked global debate but were rejected by Nigerian authorities as misleading exaggerations.
Government officials countered that violence affects both Christians and Muslims equally. They attributed conflicts to terrorism, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes rather than religious persecution.
