Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has raised questions about Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad selection, expressing skepticism over head coach Eric Chelle’s decision-making process.
On his Obi One Podcast, Mikel suggested external pressures might be influencing Chelle’s choices. “I don’t think the right players are being selected based on what I hear,” Mikel stated. “The manager doesn’t have full authority to pick whom he wants. There appears to be considerable outside influence affecting his selections.”
Nigeria will soon face Egypt in a warm-up match before beginning their Group C campaign against Tanzania. Uganda and Tunisia complete the tournament group.
Onyeka’s Mental Preparation Journey
Midfielder Paul Onyeka has shared insights into his personal development, emphasizing mental readiness techniques he employs for national team duties. Despite limited Premier League minutes at Brentford this season, the 27-year-old credits his Bundesliga loan spell at Augsburg for building resilience.
“I focus on staying calm through breathing exercises,” Onyeka explained. “I typically practice in my room before matches and during halftime. This routine helps me feel settled and prepared for competitive situations.”
World Cup Qualifying Contributions
Onyeka also reflected on his crucial role in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying campaign, particularly his 91st-minute equalizer against Benin that secured a playoff spot. “Scoring has become a priority in my development,” he noted. “We’re motivated to win AFCON after the World Cup qualification disappointment. With our talent, we want to bring the trophy home.”
