Mamelodi Sundowns secured their place in the CAF Champions League group stage with a comprehensive 7-1 aggregate victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars. The South African champions cemented their dominance with a 2-0 win in Sunday’s second leg at Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Despite carrying a commanding advantage from the first leg, Sundowns maintained relentless pressure. Nuno Santos and Peter Shalulile both found the net. This extended the team’s unbeaten run in continental competition.
Sundowns established control immediately. Khuliso Mudau threatened early with a run from the right flank. His powerful strike forced an excellent save from Remo Stars’ goalkeeper.
The breakthrough came in the 21st minute. Aubrey Modiba’s aggressive pressing regained possession in Remo Stars’ territory. His precise cutback found Santos, who calmly converted the opening goal.
Sundowns controlled proceedings with their signature passing rhythm. Just before halftime, Modiba delivered again. His corner kick reached Shalulile, who directed it past Remo Stars’ defense for 2-0.
Remo Stars attempted a second-half resurgence. Samson Olasupo created their best chances. He fired into the side netting before dragging another attempt narrowly wide.
Sundowns nearly added to their lead. Shalulile was denied a second goal by a brave defensive block. Goalkeeper Obassa Adebiyi made multiple sharp saves to limit the margin.
The result confirms Sundowns’ progression while ending Remo Stars’ continental campaign.
