Fresh turmoil erupted at the Peoples Democratic Party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday as rival factions violently clashed over control of the secretariat. The confrontation occurred when both groups scheduled simultaneous meetings at Wadata Plaza.
The faction supporting former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, now FCT Minister, faced off against the newly elected National Working Committee from Ibadan. Tempers quickly flared as both groups attempted to occupy the venue.
According to eyewitness reports, physical altercations broke out shortly after arrival. Supporters from both camps engaged in heated exchanges. The situation escalated into open confrontation.
Forced Entry and Takeover
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed then took decisive action. They accompanied newly elected PDP National Chairman Taminu Turaki into the building. The trio pushed past opposition to access the National Executive Committee hall.
Their intervention enabled the Ibadan-produced NWC members to enter. They proceeded with their scheduled NEC meeting despite resistance. This move effectively displaced Wike-aligned forces from the premises.
Violent Clashes Erupt
Chaos consumed Wadata Plaza during the takeover attempt. Security personnel clashed with protesters supporting Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s faction. Demonstrators had mobilized to block the Makinde group’s entry.
The forced installation of the Turaki-led executive deepened PDP’s internal crisis. This confrontation highlights the ongoing power struggle. It reveals deepening divisions within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
