Lionel Messi has left open the possibility of competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Argentine legend will make his final decision after evaluating his physical condition during Inter Miami’s upcoming season.
Now 38, Messi captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar 2022. He admits the thought of defending their title remains compelling. In a recent NBC News interview, Messi expressed his desire to represent Argentina again if physically prepared.
“Participating in a World Cup is extraordinary,” Messi stated. “I’d love to be there and contribute meaningfully to my national team if selected.”
The 2026 tournament will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Messi acknowledged the challenge of competing at age 39. His decision will depend on preseason assessments with Inter Miami.
“I’ll evaluate daily during preseason,” Messi explained. “I must confirm I can perform at 100% and benefit the national team. Only then will I decide.”
For the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, another World Cup holds deep significance. “I’m genuinely eager for this opportunity,” he emphasized. “Defending our title would be spectacular. Representing Argentina in major tournaments is always a dream.”
Messi remains Argentina’s record goalscorer with 114 goals in 195 appearances.
Life in Miami
Messi began his career at Barcelona in 2004 before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. He moved to Inter Miami in Major League Soccer in 2023.
Discussing his Florida lifestyle, Messi appreciates the calmer environment away from European football’s intensity. “I truly enjoy everything about Miami,” he shared. “While Barcelona holds special memories, Miami offers our family peaceful living.”
“This city allows us to live comfortably and let our children thrive freely,” Messi added.
