Lionel Messi is confident about Argentina’s chances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He believes the team possesses the will to defend their title. Messi stated they will approach the tournament with strong belief and determination.
The Argentina captain is expected to lead his country once more. The tournament will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Messi famously inspired Argentina to a historic triumph in Qatar in 2022. That victory marked the country’s third World Cup title.
Speaking to TouchlineX, Messi made his team’s ambition clear. He was asked if Argentina could retain the title. Messi responded confidently. He said, “Yes. This group will try to win the World Cup again. We will give everything and fight.”
Argentina has already secured qualification for the 2026 finals. They are considered among the favourites for the competition. The team features a strong core of players. This talent pool is built around Messi, who now plays for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
Messi Praises Pep Guardiola’s Unique Coaching Style
In a separate reflection, Messi shared his admiration for former coach Pep Guardiola. He enjoyed some of his most successful years under Guardiola at Barcelona.
Messi declared Guardiola “unique.” He believes many coaches are good, but Guardiola possesses a distinct quality. “For me, he is the best among all coaches,” Messi stated.
Messi elaborated on Guardiola’s strengths. He highlighted his attention to detail. His significant influence on the game also stands out. Messi described Guardiola as “extremely comprehensive.” This applies to “observing things” and “preparing for matches.” It also includes “communicating information to players.”
He continued, “He is the best. We were fortunate to have him at Barcelona.” Messi noted Guardiola “worked seamlessly” with the players then. All elements “came together perfectly.” This led to “all the accomplishments.”
Messi also praised Guardiola’s impact beyond trophies. He pointed to Guardiola’s influence on playing styles across Europe. Messi observed, “He went elsewhere and continued to win. This was not just because of victories. It was also because of the way his teams played.”
He gave examples of this influence. “While at Bayern,” Messi said, “although he failed to win the Champions League, he changed the way football was played in Germany. Similarly in England, he led Manchester City to change the way the league was played.”
