Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, widely known as Kcee, has finally addressed his long-rumoured rift with fellow artist Flavour.
Kcee had previously responded to a social media post, though Flavour mentioned no names. Kcee warned the highlife star. He told him to stop ‘gatekeeping’ Igbo cultural music. Kcee emphasized his longer tenure in the industry.
In a recent Yanga FM Lagos interview, Kcee offered insights into the alleged dispute. He suggested it might originate from his initial encounter with Flavour. This was when popular talent manager Soso Soberekon introduced Flavour to him for a record deal.
The ‘Limpopo’ crooner explained his refusal. He did not sign Flavour to a record deal then. Kcee stated he simply ‘didn’t see potential’ in him at that moment.
Kcee also highlighted how some colleagues perceive his talent. He believes they underrate him. This is because he does not boast about his abilities.
Kcee on the Alleged Beef with Flavour
Speaking further, Kcee shared his perspective:
“Till now, I don’t understand the reason for his beef with me,” he began. “Especially after that incident where he alleged someone was copying him. The truth is, some people write you off. They hope you remain stagnant. But when you work hard and reach unexpected levels, that’s what happened to me.”
Kcee asserted his industry precedence. “I joined the music industry before Flavour. Soso Soberekon actually brought him to me years ago. He wanted me to sign Flavour to my record label. I was already driving exotic cars and living lavishly before he even arrived in Lagos. I told Soso I couldn’t sign Flavour. At that time, I simply didn’t see his potential. It wasn’t out of any personal grudge against him.”
Addressing the lasting implications, Kcee continued: “I don’t think this is why he holds a grudge. But time will tell. Many colleagues underrate my talent. My humility also plays a part. I don’t brag, and I don’t need to. However, as I always say, time proves them wrong. My work always silences doubters. Some who doubted me have since apologized. They admitted they were wrong about me.”
