Nigerian music icon, Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has finally addressed the long-standing rumours of a rift with his fellow artist, Flavour.
This clarification follows Kcee’s recent response to a social media post by Flavour. Although Flavour did not name anyone, Kcee cautioned the highlife musician. He warned against attempts to “gatekeep” Igbo cultural music, asserting his earlier entry into the industry.
The Genesis of the Alleged Rift
Speaking in a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee hinted at the root of the alleged animosity. He suggested it might trace back to his initial encounter with Flavour. This occurred when popular talent manager, Soso Soberekon, presented Flavour to him for a potential record deal.
The “Limpopo” crooner revealed he declined to offer Flavour a record deal then. He explained his decision was based on not seeing the necessary potential in Flavour at that particular time.
Kcee also emphasized that many of his colleagues often underestimate his talent. He believes this perception is partly because he chooses not to boast about his abilities.
Kcee’s Perspective on the Incident
Kcee expressed his continued confusion regarding Flavour’s alleged animosity. He specifically referenced an incident where Flavour implied someone was copying him.
“Till now, I don’t understand the reason for his beef with me,” Kcee stated. He remarked on the phenomenon of overcoming low expectations. “When some people write you off, hoping you stay stagnant, and you work hard to reach unexpected levels, that’s what happened.”
He clarified his seniority in the industry. “I entered the music industry before Flavour,” Kcee recounted. “Years ago, Soso Soberekon even brought him to me. He wanted me to sign him to my record label.”
Kcee highlighted his success before Flavour’s arrival in Lagos. “I was already enjoying luxury cars and living large before Flavour even moved to Lagos,” he said.
He then elaborated on his decision not to sign Flavour. “I informed Soso I couldn’t sign Flavour,” Kcee recalled. “I simply didn’t see his potential then. It wasn’t born out of any personal grudge.”
While acknowledging the past, Kcee remains philosophical. “I doubt that’s the sole reason for his grudge,” he added. “But time will reveal the full story.”
Addressing Doubts About His Talent
Kcee lamented the underestimation of his talent by many peers. He attributed this partly to his humility. “A lot of my colleagues underrate my talent,” he noted. “My humility also contributed to that. Because I don’t brag. I don’t need it.”
He expressed confidence in his work to silence critics. “As I always say, time will always prove them wrong. My work consistently silences every doubter,” Kcee insisted. “Some who doubted me have even apologised, admitting their mistake.”
