Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, widely known as Kcee, recently sparked discussions. He publicly declared himself a Biafran. Kcee insisted that this identity applies to every Igbo person.
During an interview with Yanga 89.9 FM in Lagos, the singer shared his perspective. He argued that Biafra represents a cultural and ethnographical region. Kcee likened it to Arewa in the North and Oduduwa in the South-West. He stressed it is not merely a separatist label.
Kcee stated, “Every Igbo man alive today is a Biafran, as far as I am concerned. I identify as a Biafran. I am an Igbo man, and Biafra is our origin. It’s comparable to the Arewas and Oduduwas.”
He further elaborated on the historical background of the name. Kcee emphasized that its origins predate current political interpretations.
He explained, “Biafra came into existence in 1967. Frank Opigo, from Bayelsa, proposed this name for the Igbo people. We adopted it that same year. What were we called before 1967? We were Igbos. Therefore, being Igbo naturally makes you a Biafran.”
Kcee firmly believes that identifying as Igbo inherently connects an individual to the wider Biafran heritage.
