The Anglican community in Kaduna State mourns a profound loss. Venerable Edwin Achi, a respected Anglican priest, has been tragically killed. Bandits abducted him and his wife, Sarah. This happened in the Chikun Local Government Area.
Armed bandits raided their Nissi community home. This occurred on October 28, 2025. It was a late-night attack. His wife and daughter were also taken captive.
The kidnappers initially demanded N600 million. This ransom was later reduced to N200 million. However, Achi’s family could not secure these funds.
Diocese Confirms Painful Loss
The Diocese of Kaduna, Anglican Communion, confirmed his death. A statement expressed “heavy hearts and deep sorrow.” It announced the “passing unto glory of The Venerable Edwin Achi.” He served as Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero. The Diocese noted his “faithful ministry, humble spirit, and unwavering devotion.” It described his loss as “painful.” They continue to pray for his wife and daughter’s release. The “Standup for Jesus 2025” event is cancelled in his honor.
The Anglican Communion’s Kaduna Diocese announced Achi’s death. This happened via their official Facebook page on Tuesday, November 26, 2025. They called the news deeply painful for the church and the wider community.
On Tuesday, photos of the priest and his wife emerged. These images showed them in captivity. This caused significant public concern. The criminals had threatened to kill them. This would occur if the ransom was not paid by week’s end.
Achi’s nephew, Avril, later confirmed the priest’s murder. Avril had previously stated the kidnappers used Achi’s phone. They took photos and posted them to his Facebook account.
A family member shared their grief with FIJ. The household felt devastated. They could not afford the demanded ransom.
Security agencies have not yet commented. They have not detailed efforts to rescue the remaining captives.
The kidnappers initially asked for N600 million. This demand later dropped to about N200 million. An ultimatum was issued. They threatened to kill the captives. This would happen if the ransom remained unpaid by week’s end, a family source confirmed.
