Kabiru Turaki has emerged as the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He immediately pledged to rebuild the opposition party. His vision includes deep reforms. These reforms aim to restore internal democracy. He also seeks to end years of impunity within the PDP.
Turaki delivered his acceptance speech on Saturday. This was at the PDP national convention in Ibadan. He acknowledged the significant mandate given to him. Turaki fully understands its weight.
A Commitment to the Nigerian People
“The cross you have given us means that you watch us also take it to the Nigerian people,” Turaki stated. “That we shall do.” He admitted the task is not simple. “Our party is at a crossroads now,” he continued. “But we are up to the task; we are up to the challenge.”
The former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs announced a new operational roadmap. This will guide his leadership. “Soon, we shall roll out our guiding principles,” he explained. This will also detail the modus operandi for achieving them. Turaki assured, “We shall be hitting the ground running from day one.”
Turaki promised his team would approach this vital task with dedication. They will also demonstrate clarity of purpose.
Reaffirming PDP as a Grassroots Movement
He reaffirmed the PDP’s core identity. It is a grassroots political movement. The new chairman vowed to eliminate impunity. He pledged to reposition the party. It will become a true platform for the Nigerian people.
“Today, the Peoples Democratic Party is the only one that has retained its name,” he noted. “This is possible because it is the party of the Nigerian people.” Turaki emphasized his resolve. “Make no mistake about it; we are returning the party to you, the people. There will be no more impunity.”
Election Results and Key Appointments
Turaki secured 1,516 votes during the election. The polls were held at the Lekan Salami Stadium. He significantly outpaced his closest rival. Senator Yakubu Danmarke garnered 275 votes.
Former Anambra Central Senator and convention supervisor, Ben Obi, announced the results. He also confirmed another key appointment. Former Oyo State Deputy Governor, Taofeeq Arapaja, emerged as the new National Secretary of the party.
