Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has expressed his readiness to lead Nigerian football. He made it clear, however, that his involvement depends on transparency. Mikel insists on a system free from corruption within the Nigeria Football Federation.
Mikel Obi spoke after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. This recent setback highlighted deeper issues for him. He views the disappointment as a symptom. Nigerian football, Mikel believes, requires a complete reset. It needs more than just new faces.
Mikel, now 37, reflected on his extensive service to Nigeria. His commitment, he stated, has never faltered. “One thing I have always done, even from my early days, is fight for the country,” Mikel Obi told Arise TV. “I don’t know many players who have done that like I have.” He mentioned his journey through the U17, U20, and senior national teams. “These were years of sacrifice. I have never once said no to my country,” he affirmed.
A Call for Transparency and Proper Governance

He is open to advancing Nigerian football. However, he requires an environment where he can speak honestly. He must be able to push for genuine reforms. “When I know I can give my opinion and help, I will always be ready,” he stated. “But I won’t have corruption tied to me. I am never going to agree to that.”
Mikel emphasized the need for proper processes. “If you want us to go forward, things must be done properly,” he urged. “Get the right people. People who share the same vision.” This ensures a good environment for players to perform at home.
Mikel has already gained administrative experience. In July 2023, Governor Caleb Mutfwang appointed him Honorary Adviser on Sports in Plateau State. This role allows him to contribute to sports planning. He also works on grassroots development.
His illustrious playing career includes captaining Nigeria to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations win. He secured Olympic bronze in 2016. Mikel led the team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He earned 91 caps, retiring after the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. His journey from U17 and U20 teams to senior captain inspires many young Nigerian footballers.
