Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has dismissed rumors about her contesting the 2027 elections.
The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) invited her to campaign in November. Billboards endorsing her for the elections have also appeared. One particular billboard in Ogun State read, “Senator (Prof) Iyabo Obasanjo. Omo wa ni, eniyan wa ni, ara wa ni.” This translates to: ‘She is our child, our person, our kin.’
Clarifying Her Position
In an interview with Remo TV, Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello responded to these developments. She served as a Senator for Ogun Central senatorial district from 2007 to 2011. She clarified that she is not actively campaigning for any seat in the 2027 elections. This stands despite requests from several groups.
She recounted, “Some people who worked with me previously have voiced their support. They said, ‘This is who we like.’ Initially, I asked them to stop. I explained that I have a good life. I live in the US and teach at a university. I already have the life I desire.”
The US-based professor and epidemiologist shared that she was later advised. She was told to let her supporters be, rather than cautioning them.
She continued, “These individuals clarified they weren’t asking for money or anything else. They simply sought my permission. They wished to express their support. Everyone said it signifies love and appreciation for my past efforts. People also suggested that stopping them would dampen their enthusiasm. So, I allowed them to proceed.”
She reiterated, “Nobody can claim I am actively campaigning. I have not done anything myself. However, my supporters are moving forward. I have given them permission to do what they feel is right. That is the extent of my involvement.”
The Importance of Good Service
Obasanjo-Bello previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health. This was during Governor Gbenga Daniel’s administration, from 2003 to 2007. She urged the public to excel in their respective roles and positions.
She explained the public’s desire for her return. “It connects to my work in teaching,” she said. “I enjoy helping people improve. I guide them through their lives. Many individuals in Ogun State have benefited from my assistance. They have now become successful and appreciate it greatly.”
She added, “For me, this shows people should always strive to do good. This applies whether in politics or any other field. When you do good, people notice. They will then approach you for opportunities later.”
