Werder Bremen faces a new challenge. Star striker Victor Boniface is out with a knee injury. He will miss Sunday’s Bundesliga match against VfB Stuttgart. This latest setback compounds the club’s growing list of unavailable players.
The Nigerian international suffered a painful knee contusion. This happened during a training challenge earlier in the week. Head coach Horst Steffen clarified the situation on Friday. He told Bremen t-online, “It was a knee-to-knee incident. It was very painful.”
The club has not yet set a return date for Boniface. However, the 24-year-old is expected to miss more than just this weekend’s game. Boniface has endured a difficult period at Bremen. He has struggled to find his rhythm. He is still awaiting his first goal of the season.
His frustration grew this week. He was also excluded from Nigeria’s final 28-man squad. This was for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The squad was announced on Thursday. Boniface was initially on Eric Chelle’s provisional 54-man list. But he ultimately did not make the final cut.
Coach Steffen faces more injury challenges beyond Boniface. Mitchell Weiser, Felix Agu, and Maximilian Wöber are also sidelined. These long-term injuries limit the team’s options. This comes at a critical point in their season.
The increasing number of injuries will force tactical adjustments. Werder Bremen aims to maintain its league position. They must now navigate this crucial period with a depleted squad.
