The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a letter from the Samuel Anyanwu faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). INEC stated the correspondence “failed to meet the requirements of the law.”
The letter was jointly signed by Abdulrahaman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu. It requested a postponement of the Ekiti Governorship Primary. This primary was scheduled for November 8, 2025.
The faction cited “logistical reasons” for its inability to hold the primary as planned.
Dated November 6, 2025, the letter was titled “Postponement of PDP Ekiti State Congress/Governorship Primary.” The faction informed INEC that a new date would be announced later.
The letter stated: “We wish to inform you that the PDP Ekiti State Congress and Governorship primary scheduled for November 8, 2025, has been postponed due to logistical reasons constraining this exercise…”
Despite this request, the PDP proceeded with the primary on November 8. Dr. Wole Oluyede emerged as the winner. He polled 279 votes. Funso Agent received 239 votes, and Funmilayo Ogun secured 17 votes.
INEC responded on November 10, 2025. The response was addressed to the PDP National Secretary. It carried reference number INEC/DEPM/PDF/286/94. In it, INEC declared the postponement request invalid.
Mrs. Rose Oriaran Anthony, the Commission’s Secretary, signed the letter. She stated that the notice failed to comply with the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.
The INEC letter detailed the non-compliance. It quoted Part 2(12)3 of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022. This section mandates that “the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shall jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit the same to the Commission.”
The letter concluded: “The Commission hereby informs you that it has rejected your submission for non-compliance with the requirements of the Electoral Act.”
This firm stance by the commission effectively invalidates Abdulrahaman Mohammed’s claim. He had been presenting himself as the acting national chairman of the PDP.
