The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has summoned the two warring factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). A troubleshooting meeting is currently underway. It is taking place at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The ongoing meeting brings together key representatives. This includes the Tanimu Turaki-led faction. Also present is the Nyesom Wike-backed Abdulrahman Mohammed faction. Their goal is to address the PDP’s lingering leadership crisis.
Abdulrahman Mohammed arrived with members of his national caretaker committee. Senator Sam Anyanwu, the committee’s secretary, was among them.
Meanwhile, the Nyesom Wike-backed National Caretaker Committee of the PDP has taken significant steps. They have dissolved the executives of 14 state chapters. Plans are also underway to conduct fresh congresses. These are scheduled for January 2026.
The committee firmly asserted its position. It stated that the leadership of Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu is the only legitimate national structure. Abdulrahman serves as Acting National Chairman, and Anyanwu as Acting National Secretary. This structure, they claim, is recognised by the party.
This stance was outlined in a communiqué. It followed the committee’s meeting on Thursday evening in Abuja. Acting Publicity Secretary, Haruna Jungun, read the statement.
This development unfolds amidst ongoing disagreements. The November 16 national convention in Ibadan is a key point of contention. PDP governors had endorsed this convention.
During that convention, Tanimu Turaki (SAN) and other National Working Committee members were elected. They were to serve four-year tenures. However, the rival camp does not recognise this move.
